New research on the framework knitting industry in the US by Emily Whitted has won an award. Shared via the Framework Knitters Museum, where Emily worked last summer and which is well worth visiting #knittinghistory #knitting #textilehistory #frameworkknitting #knittedstockings #dresshistory #costumehistory #fashionhistoryThis week we are thrilled to learn that incoming doctoral student Emily Whitted has won the E. McClung Fleming Thesis Prize from the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture for her M.A. thesis "Made in Germantown: Production, Wear, and Repair of American Frame-Knit Stockings 1683-1830".

Although Germantown (a community northwest of Philadelphia) was well known as a center of framework knitting, until Emily's research few details about the industry were known.

"Emily's thesis," explains Linda Eaton, John L. & Marjorie P. McGraw Director of Collections & Senior Curator of Textiles at Winterthur Museum, “renders visible the details of the male-dominated industry, which created frame-work knitted stockings by the thousands, as well as the networks of women taking part in the finishing, repair and sale of these stockings and the bound laborers who fled their masters wearing stockings that were clearly recognizable to people at that time.”

In addition to archival research, Emily visited the Framework Knitters Museum in Ruddington, England to learn how to operate an 18th-century English style knitting frame and compare it to the very different frames used in Germantown. This is exciting work in the history of textiles and technology, labor history, and material culture. Congratulations, Emily!
